Pools

Kayak Pool Play provides an opportunity for beginning, intermediate, and advanced paddlers to practice skill development and safety techniques within the controlled environment of an indoor pool.  Currently, there are pool sessions in Shoreline, Tukwila, and Tacoma locations on Sundays and Wednesdays during the fall, winter, and spring months

Pools and Times:

Washington Kayak Club runs open pool sessions from October through April at various locations in the Puget Sound area.

Currently we have Sunday morning sessions at Foster Pool in Tukwila, and Shoreline Pool, on alternating weeks, from 9:00 to 11:00.

See the Pool Location page for directions.

About Pool Sessions:

These pool sessions are for individual practice, and do not include instruction;  however, there are always folks there willing to help out if you're working on your roll, need some pointers, or just someone to spot you.

There is always a hose just outside the door, and we ask that you clean your boat off thoroughly before bringing it inside.

While the pool sessions are primarily for members, guests are welcome.  WKC is required to have substantial insurance coverage to rent the pools, and our coverage is provided by the American Canoe Association (ACA).  ACA requires that all participants in WKC on-water events be ACA members.  You may join ACA for a one year membership for $30, or purchase a one event membership for $5.  You must sign a waiver in either case.  The waiver doubles as an application form.

You will be asked to sign in on our event roster.  It has spaces for name, phone number, ACA number, emergency contact information, and a place to check whether you're paying the WKC member or guest fee, and whether you're paying the $5 ACA event fee.  Please be sure to check off the appropriate boxes so the pool coordinator doesn't have a mess to sort out later.  It gets pretty busy and it's easy for them to miss little details like that.

Session Fees:

(1) If you are a member of WKC and ACA          $8

(2) If you are a member of WKC but not ACA     $13

(3) If you are a member of ACA but not WKC     $13

(4) If you are not a member of either club         $18

See Fee details below.

Fees in detail:

If you are a current member of ACA: WKC members $8.00  Non WKC members $13.00

If you are not a current member of ACA:

  • (1) Join the ACA with an annual membership (applications can be downloaded from the web and filled out ahead of time, or you can get one from the pool coordinator).  You may join at the pool session if you wish.
  • (2) or pay $5 and sign an ACA waiver, which is good for that pool session only.

WKC is required by the pools to have insurance.  Our insurance is provided through membership in the American Canoe Association (ACA).  ACA requires participants in on water events to be ACA members.

Lines (2) and (4) above reflect a $5 charge for one-event membership in ACA.  If you plan on attending pool sessions regularly, it's a better deal to join the ACA.  One year membership through the WKC is $30 for individuals, $40 for families.  You can join either club at the pool session, or download the forms from this web site and mail them in with your payment.
