Summer 2009 President's Message
Tuesday, 21 July 2009 02:26

Hey fellow paddlers,

As I write this note, we in the Pacific Northwest are enjoying our 28th consecutive rain-less day.  I do hope you all are getting out on our area’s beautiful lakes, rivers and saltwater destinations to soak up some paddling fun in the sun.  Our WKC Bulletin is always in need of a story, experience, or trip report from our paddling membership. I especially encourage those of you who are new to our sport to submit your story.

Recently the sea kayaking side our Club held their WKC Basic Class at the Environmental Learning Center on Coronet Bay. We had 23 students successfully complete the class and many experienced a trip thru Deception Pass!  A big THANK YOU goes out to Dave Carlson and Dale Tangeman who organized the class.  An even bigger THANK YOU goes to Mare Carlson and Karen Tangeman, who manage to plan for and feed a small army for the three-day event.  Finally, a thank you to the instructors for their time, effort and expertise shared with the students.

Final thought, this is the time of year that we read and hear about accidents and incidents on the water. We need to ‘suggest’ to those new kayakers who are not being cautious or just plain doing ‘dumb things,’ that they need to be cautious on the very cold waters we paddle.

 Happy Paddling,

Bill Porter, WKC Prez

Team River Runner Summer Event Schedule 2009
Saturday, 27 June 2009 15:38
The nice weather is on its way volunteers, and Team River Runner has planned some fun open water trips and opportunities!  Please look at the schedule below to determine which events you can attend as a volunteer.

Saturday, May 16th – Lake day: Rattlesnake Lake 12:00am – 4:00pm

Our first lake day of the season at beautiful Rattlesnake Lake (Cedar River Watershed)!  We need instructors and safety boaters, as well as a land coordinator.
Take I-90 east and get off on Exit 32 (436th Avenue SE) just past the exits to North Bend. Take a right off of the exit, heading south on 436th Ave SE which turns into Cedar Falls Road. Travel about three miles and follow the signs posted for Rattlesnake Lake.

Saturday, June 13th through Sunday, June 14th – Wenatchee River Festival, would primarily be a rafting and overnight camping trip in the Wenatchee area

We would like to provide an oar raft experience and a paddle raft experience.  We are looking for raft guides and rafts for this event, as well as safety boaters.  If there are students who are ready for some moving water we will look at doing a section from Cashmere down.

Saturday, June 27th – Lake Day: Spanaway Lake – 12:00 – 4:00pm

We need instructors and safety boaters, as well as a land coordinator.  From I-5 Take exit 127 follow the Puyallup/Mt. Rainier signs. Go east for 2 miles on SR 512. Take the second exit (Parkland/Spanaway). Turn right onto Pacific Avenue (SR 7). Travel approximately 3 miles and turn right on Old Military Rd (152nd St). Go 1/2 mile and entrance to the Park's main gate is on the left. Meet at the small pond on the right as you come into the park.

Saturday, July 11th – River day (location and time TBD)

Saturday, July 25th – Lake day/fishing trip (location and time TBD)

Does anyone know anything about kayak/canoe fishing, and where to go?  We would love to have someone with some fishing experience coordinate this event.

Saturday, August 8th – River day (location and time TBD)

Saturday, August 22nd – Sea kayaking with optional overnight camping trip (location and time TBD)

We would like to offer a sea kayak trip with a supported overnight option, and we are looking for someone to coordinate this event.

Saturday, August 29th through Sunday, August 30th – Surf day at Westport – with option to camp overnight

Hamp coordinated this last year and it rocked!  We will need a surf boater to coordinate this day.

Saturday, September 12th – River day and BBQ (location and time TBD).
