POOLS OVERVIEW

poolsWashington Kayak Club runs open pool sessions from October through April at various locations in the Puget Sound area. Currently we have Sunday morning sessions at Foster Pool in Tukwila from 8:45 to 10:45, and Shoreline Pool, on alternating weeks, from 9:00 to 11:00. There is now a session at Eastside Pool n Tacoma on the same weeks as Shoreline. Helene Madison Pool sessions are Wednesday evenings from 8:30 to 10:30, every other week from October through February, and every week during March and April.

There is always a hose just outside the door, and we ask that you clean your boat off thoroughly before bringing it inside. These pool sessions are for individual practice, and do not include instruction;  however, there are always folks there willing to help out if you’re working on your roll, need some pointers, or just someone to spot you. While the pool sessions are primarily for members, guests are welcome.

WKC is required to have substantial insurance coverage to rent the pools, and our coverage is provided by the American Canoe Association (ACA).  ACA requires that all participants in WKC on-water events be ACA members.  You may join ACA for a one year membership for $30, or purchase a one event membership for $5.  You must sign a waiver in either case.  The waiver doubles as an application form. You will be asked to sign in on our event roster.  It has spaces for name, phone number, ACA number, emergency contact information, and a place to check whether you’re paying the WKC member or guest fee, and whether you’re paying the $5 ACA event fee.

FEES:

If you are a current member of ACA: WKC members $8.00, Non WKC members $13.00

If you are not a current member of ACA: In addition to the pool fee above you must either:

(1) Join the ACA with an annual membership (applications can be downloaded from the web and filled out ahead of time, or you can get one from the pool coordinator).  You may join at the pool session if you wish.

-or-

(2) pay $5 and sign an ACA waiver, which is good for that pool session only.

Team River Runner -- Conscious Paddling

At the Team River Runner (TRR) weekly pool session following the 20 hour ACA Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), we talked as a group about how the pool and lake sessions had become the “training” ground for the fun stuff to come, instead of each session being its own fun event. We had a number of vets drop out, in part due to the emphasis on learning to roll.

After the IDW, we set the pool session up as a big group event, instead of individual instruction and HAD A BLAST!!!! Just from attending the IDW, we all felt empowered to actually teach stuff. It was so awesome.

Idamay (Curtis) led us through stretches before we started paddling. We ALL did stroke drills together, led by Mike (Grijalva). Then we broke off into smaller groups to work on specific skills, but still connected as a whole.

Bill, one of the vets, needed to get out a bit early because his legs were cramping, but he didn’t want to leave because he was having so much FUN! So, I set him up at one end of the pool, in his wheelchair. After reviewing the river paddle signals as a group, Bill did the paddle signals and we made it a “red light/green light” type game. Everyone was paddling forward, then stopping, then going to the right, then the left. It was REALLY fun, and Bill could still participate.

Mark (a vet), who had been to about three pool sessions even asked to work on T-rescue and hip snaps because he felt comfortable enough to try. It was so successful – we really felt empowered after the IDW.

Team River Runner, established in August 2004 by kayakers in the Washington, DC area, is primarily a volunteer non-profit organization run by a council of kayakers and overseen by a board of directors. The Seattle Chapter will celebrate its one year anniversary this month, January 2009.

TRR gives military veterans and their family members an opportunity to find health, healing, and new challenges through whitewater boating and other paddling sports. The benefits of TRR have as much to do with social support, finding emotional strength and re-creating personal identity as they do with athletic activity.
