Winter time is one of the best times of the year to paddle here in the Puget Sound area. Recently a fellow WKC ‘er and I paddled around Lummi Island.

Date: Late December 2011 Location: San Juan Islands
It's become a tradition that every year between Christmas and the New Year, several WKC paddlers do an overnight, multiday paddle.
This past years 'tradition', Bill Porter, Dave Ortland and Rob Freelove decided to paddle to Sucia and Patos Island north of Orcas Island.

Paddle in the North Cascades area, enjoy a long weekend of peaceful remote camping. The lake can get windy, so you should be comfortable paddling in windy conditions. Come up and paddle for a day or spend the night and paddle both days. We'll see fall colors and spectacular wilderness scenery, beautiful canyons, wonderful waterfalls and creeks, plenty of opportunities to take a picture or two ! Very nice ( free campsites ) with bear lockers, tables and campfire rings and other 'essential" facilities.

This trip started about 11 years ago. In August 1998, I went to Bowron with family friends. There were 10 of us in five canoes. My daughter was 11 at the time. This was the first time I had ever been in a human powered watercraft.
I had all the wrong equipment and clothing. I also had no clue how to keep a canoe pointed and heading forward. I had a great time but knew I would not get into a canoe again. Five years ago, I started kayaking. I knew at that time I would have to go back to Bowron. I figured this year was as good as any.

The skies are bright overcast – photographer’s light. There’s a wisp of a breeze, a late-season smell of fetid carbon. Raven swoosh noisily by, rowing the air. We’re paddling just inside the kelp line, on a zigzag course along the forested shore of two-mile wide Johnstone Strait.
