Whitewater Safety

The good news is that the winter storms passing through Washington are bringing plenty of snow to the Cascade Range.  The SNOTEL data indicates that the Cascades have average or above average snow fall at 100- 120% of normal while the rest of the western states are considerable below normal.  All this bodes well for a good spring runoff and another great boating year.

I know that Michael Deckert celebrates the opening day of boating season appropriately on January 1st but not all kayaker share Mike’s enthusiasm for the sport and winter boating.  Spring boating season is ready to take off in just a couple months so it’s a good time do a little preparation to make the most of those first few river runs as well as having a fun and safe time.  Consider taking advantage of the WKC pool sessions to tune up that on side roll or maybe finally perfect that off side roll.  Sunday pool sessions are available at three locations: Tacoma pool, Shoreline pool and at Tukwila pool.  Wednesday evening pool sessions are also available at the Shoreline pool.  Please check the WKC Calendar for dates and time of the pool offerings.

One additional consideration is the existence of a number of new trees and logs in the river as a result of the ice and snow storms.  The spring runoff will add more logs and shift the existing logs to new locations.  Please use an extra measure of caution when running your favorite river for the first time this season.  If you can not see a clean line from the top of the drop take the time to get out and scout the drop.
